Midlevel Providers

One main issue that ASDA is working to address is the adoption of “Midlevel Providers” or dental therapists (DT) and advanced dental therapists (ADT) that have the ability to perform limed dental procedures. These “limited procedures” include tooth extractions and fillings. The training required to becoming a DT involves completing a three-year associates program. Although intended to address the issue to access to dental care and to decrease dental related emergency room visits it has not been shown effective in the two states (Minnesota and Maine) were DT’s are currently able to practice.

ASDA’s stance is that only dentists graduating from a four-year dental school should perform irreversible procedures on the public.
